Tribute to Mary Hillman 1947-2008

It is with immense sadness that PHP has learned of the sudden death of Cllr Mary Hillman.

Cllr Hillman, who died on Monday March 24, was a Board Director since the ALMO began in 2003.

As a Councillor, Mary represented the Branksome East ward since May 2003, having previously been Chairman of Branksome Residents' Association for many years.

She was also the Council's Champion for People with Disabilities and worked hard on behalf of the disadvantaged in the community.

Mary was committed to improving health and social care in Poole and was especially interested in supporting people with learning difficulties.

In June 2007, Mary was appointed Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Equalities, Social Inclusion and Active Communities.

Mary leaves her husband Greg, two sons, two step-daughters and three grandchildren.

Chief Executive, Joe Logan says, "Mary has been a stalwart member of the PHP Board from the start and has been an enthusiastic and passionate member of the team. This news has been received with disbelief and deep sadness. We will miss her terribly."

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bill Constance, says, "Recently, Mary was elected to be Board Champion for Equality & Diversity. She was deeply committed to the principles of fairness for all and in helping all sections of our community to have a voice.

"She was a rock upon which PHP was able to develop.But most of all, she was a really good person; she will be missed by everyone who knew her.Our hearts go out to all her family."

At her family's request, a civic funeral is to be held for Cllr Hillman on Friday 4th April. The service will commence at 3:30pm at St. James' Church, Church Street, Poole. The service will be followed by a committal at Poole Crematorium for family and close friends only.
