Disabled Adaptations- Final Assessment

Further information on the final assessment, who pays and organising the work.

Then what happens?

Grab rails and handrails
The occupational therapist will order these to be installed by Nottingham Rehab Supplies. This should be completed in a week.

Minor adaptations (Up to £1000)
All other minor adaptation will normally be ordered by Poole Housing Partnership (PHP) immediately, and installation should take place within 20 working days of receiving the referral from Social Services.

Major adaptations (Over £1000)
There is normally a waiting list for major adaptations. We will try to proceed with the adaptation as soon as we can but there may be a delay when the level of demand is high. Priority will then be given to those with a critical need.

So, if I qualify for an adaptation, will I definitely be able to have one?

In most cases this is true. However, PHP has a duty as a landlord to ensure that resources are invested sensibly in the housing stock.

PHP will therefore have to look carefully at your circumstances to assess whether the adaptation is a reasonable and practical solution.

Factors which might be taken into account are:

  • If you are already on the transfer list for alternative accommodation
  • If a transfer to a more suitable property would provide an acceptable solution
  • If PHP has an existing programme of improvements which would result in any adaptation having to be replaced within two years
  • If we would have to remove the adaptation at a later date. For example, wherever possible we will try to provide a shower in addition to a bath rather than remove the bath for a level access shower

Some cases are complex and involve a range of issues which are not easy to resolve. These might require meetings between the relevant units within the council to find an acceptable solution.

PHP are not always able to make a definite decision at application stage but may review the application once your request reaches the top of the waiting list.

Do I have to pay?

No, if you are a council tenant the service is free. However, the maximum cost we can approve is £25,000. If the cost exceeds this you will have to make up the difference, but most works will come well within the £25,000 limit.

Where the cost of adapting a property will be high, we will explore the possibility of finding more suitable accommodation and discuss this with you.

Who will provide expert advice and organise the work?

The Occupational Therapist will provide the expert advice. If it is a major adaptation this is done with a Surveyor.

The work will be ordered and paid for by PHP. The work will be undertaken by a contractor selected by PHP.
