Tackling ASB: Thai Style!

Local man, Mick Dardis, is working with local children, their parents and Thai boxing experts to help 'kick' anti-social behaviour out of Poole.

Thai Boxing

With over 30 years experience in Thai Boxing, Mick sees the sport as having something for everyone. He says, "When I came to Poole, I noticed kids hanging 'round on the streets and that there wasn't a lot for them to do. I had a chat with local people and they agreed.

"Thai Boxing gives young people something to do; to burn their energy as well as teaching them discipline."

With thanks to local church minister, Rev. Frasier Smith, Poole Thai Boxing Club takes place at the Methodist Church Hall, in Poole Old Town. The club attracts people of all ages, providing both adult and children's classes.

Mick says, "Thai Boxing is great for building confidence, improving fitness, channeling energy and dealing with aggression.

"All of these things are positive for the local community, and I believe that if you want to make a change to a community, you have to go to the heart of it."

The club is enjoying increasing success, with one member, Clive Alison, having recently competed at the British Championships.

Mick takes a 'sport for all' approach to running the club, by providing free equipment to members who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend. He says, "If you'd like to have a go at Thai Boxing, but are worried about the cost involved, just give me a call. I wouldn't like to see a child not take part in sport, simply because of concerns about money".

Mick is looking to expand his community work to running a weight-loss programme, for both children and adults. He explains, "I'm just in the process of setting this up, but it will be based in Poole." Watch this space for an update on this exciting new venture by Mick!
