Sheltered Housing

What is Sheltered Housing?

Sheltered Housing is purpose built accommodation for people over 60 years of age. The unfurnished flats and bungalows provide independent living in a safe, secure, communal environment with the support of a Sheltered Housing Officer.

We manage 31 sheltered schemes on behalf of Poole Borough Council in various locations across the Borough.

The majority of sheltered schemes have a communal lounge and kitchen, many also provide a guest room and laundry facility. Each property is entirely self-contained and tenants may come and go as they please, but with the knowledge there is help available at the press of a button.

All properties have an intercom system linked directly to a Sheltered Housing Officer or Control Centre, who can be contacted day or night by pressing a button.

The most important part of the intercom system is the pendant which acts as the radio trigger. This can be worn around the neck and when pressed, will set off the alarm anywhere in your home.

In addition all properties have a smoke detector connected to the intercom that alerts the Sheltered Housing Officer, or Control Centre staff when activated.

Our sheltered schemes have a dedicated gardening team, surveyor and handy person service providing an enhanced housing service specifically for our sheltered housing tenants.

Very Sheltered Housing

Belmont Court is a development of 35 unfurnished self-contained flats offering very sheltered housing for frail elderly people. The scheme is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tenants on this scheme are provided with many communal facilities including a meal at lunchtime if required.

What does the Sheltered Housing Officer do?

Each sheltered scheme has a key worker or Sheltered Housing Officer who is responsible for managing the scheme. She/He will be able to give you information relating to your tenancy and give you advise where necessary on services available in sheltered housing and in the community.

The Sheltered Housing Officer will provide support by completing a support plan with you and agreeing what assistance you might need. They will liaise with other agencies or your family to ensure you receive the right assistance including personal care, benefits and utility services.

As part of the support plan the Sheltered Housing Officer will offer a visiting or call service which will be tailored to your individual needs and will be reviewed annually or when circumstances change. The Sheltered Housing Officer's role is to provide an enhanced housing management service to enable tenants to live independently without interfering in your daily life.
